Your family is always welcome here at Majesty. The heart of children's ministry at our church is to teach kids about who God is and how His word applies to their lives in creative and memorable ways. Through engaging teaching, supportive environments, and close knit small group classes, we guide kids towards a better understanding of what it means to have a real relationship with God. We want kids to know that the Bible is full of interesting stories that matter in their lives today, that fun and games are definitely allowed at church, that worship can be full of loud music and silly dancing, and that there are adults in the church who truly want to love and lead them closer to Jesus. In other words, we want them to know that where God is, life is a lot more fun! If you spend any time around our church at all, you'll quickly learn one thing: we love students. They're smart. They're funny. They're bold. And they're bursting with potential. We truly believe that the middle and high school students in our midst are world changers in the making. That's why student ministry is such a huge part of what we do at our church. We want to guide our students in developing a personal faith in Christ as they step into their specific roles in the story He's writing with their lives. We work hard to create environments that engage students in good conversation about God, encouraging them to ask questions, search out answers, and truly learn to listen to His leading in their lives. Don't worry, all the good stuff at our church isn't just for the under 18 crowd! We have plenty of engaging events and gatherings designed to build the faith and community of our adults as well. Young or old, Christian or not, single or married, man or woman—we've got a place for you! We know that attending a church service for the first time can be a super scary thing. At Broadway, while a number of beliefs connect us, we find that it is the way we believe that matters most.  In any Christian church there are a variety of opinions and beliefs about who God is, and about who we are called to be. Some people emphasize one doctrine, and some emphasize another. Some folks feel certain about many facets of their faith – and some folks are willing to admit that they don’t always know what they believe.  At BPC, we make room for folks anywhere along this spectrum, and we do so for two key reasons: 1) because it is honest about who we are as imperfect people, and 2) because it leaves room for God to be God.  Recognizing that God alone is God may sound a bit obvious, but it is a key component of the so-called ‘Reformed Tradition,’ of which Presbyterians are a part. During the Protestant Reformation, teachers like John Calvin called the Church to take special care not to set up idols to our own ideas, lest we begin to worship our conceptions of God rather than worship God alone.  This doesn’t mean that we set aside believing all together. Instead, it means that our beliefs are ever growing, changing and deepening. We let the Spirit guide our faith as it speaks through the Bible, and speaks to our hearts. We listen for the ancient stories of God’s followers, how they were released from bondage and captivity and called into new life. We are challenged by the words of the prophets, who called out for justice for all God’s people. We study the words of Jesus, and struggle to learn from the lesson of his life, death, and resurrection. We find ourselves confronted again and again with his call to love our neighbors, our enemies, and ourselves. And, as we listen and learn through these ancient stories, we find our eyes newly opened to the world around us, and to the ways God is calling us to live in this world, in this time.  You may also notice that we’ve been using the word “we” quite a bit in this section. “We” is an awfully important word in our way of believing. This is because the journey of faith takes all of us. We are a community of followers, and we struggle and celebrate our faith together. Jesus called together a group of disciples, and in doing so he initiated a grand conversation that has never stopped in more than 2000 years. At one point he asked the disciples, “Who do you say that I am?” The conversation still isn’t over.  Of course, it isn’t just about the conversation. Whatever the words we find, our faith is meant to be lived – not just in words but in actions. What good is it to believe that God created this beautiful, delicate world, if we aren’t caring for it like the gift that it is? What good is it to believe that God loves and cares for the poor, if we aren’t doing something about it? We work together and worship together. We share our questions, our doubts, our hopes, and frustrations. We listen to the stories of the Bible, and we try to learn from our ancestors—both their triumphs and their tragedies. We seek to follow Jesus as he leads us to love our neighbors. We trust that God is active in our world, and in every human life – bringing healing to our brokenness, bringing justice to the oppressed, bringing hope to the hopeless. We make mistakes, and we do our best to learn from them, too, even as we give thanks for God’s grace. Closer to home, we are a member congregation of the Presbytery of New York City. The PC(USA) is a theologically diverse community of 8,600 congregations with roughly 1.15 million members. Through our relationship with the PC(USA) we are also connected with international mission workers, seeking justice and sharing hope throughout the world. We also connect with Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, as it supports relief efforts wherever catastrophes may strike.  Historically, we Presbyterians trace our theological and structural roots to the writings of John Calvin (1509-1564). Our particular branch of the Christian family tree moves from Calvin through Scotland before coming into the States. The word "Presbyterian" comes from the Greek word *presbuteros*, which means “elder.” The vision and leadership of the church comes not only from professional clergy (“Teaching Elders”) but also from ordained members of the congregation (“Ruling Elders.”) Through shared leadership, we strive to be open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. In the last century, BPC has become a vibrant and inclusive community of welcome. Throughout the week, hundreds of people come here seeking food, medical care, and shelter; our Nursery School prepares children for a life of learning; our student group explores the challenges and joys of faith in the context of our times; and the list goes on.**  The story begins back in December of 1822, when a young pastor proposed to the Presbytery of New York City that he begin a "Sabbath School" on the "edge of the wilderness" known today as Greenwich Village. Under his leadership, the church began with 10 members who directed their energies towards reforming the "saloon-sodden neighborhood where the recalcitrant residents were found reduced by intemperance to beggary, wretchedness, and death." By 1825, the congregation was formally chartered as the Bleecker Street Presbyterian Church.  In the 1850s, the congregation made its first move uptown, to Fourth Avenue and 22nd Street, becoming the Fourth Avenue Presbyterian Church. There, in the 1860s, the church came under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Howard Crosby. Dr. Crosby was a dynamic presence, not only in the church, but in the City and the denomination. (Indeed, Crosby Street, in Lower Manhattan, continues to bear his name.) At one point, Dr. Crosby’s “Society for the Prevention of Crime” managed to suspend the sale of alcohol in all city saloons. From 1870-1881, Dr. Crosby also served as Chancellor to New York University. Dr. Crosby would eventually become a leading opponent of Dr. Charles Briggs, a professor at Union Theological Seminary. Crosby espoused a belief in the “complete verbal inspiration and inerrancy of the Scriptures,” while Prof. Briggs taught that Scripture must be studied and understood in the light of its historical context. After Briggs was (sadly) convicted of heresy by the General Assembly, Union broke away from the Presbyterian Church and became the independent institution it is today.  In 1910, the Fourth Avenue congregation purchased the property at 114th Street, and two years later the cornerstone was laid for what would become the Broadway Presbyterian Church. The first worship service in our current building was held on November 10, 1912. During this time, the fundamentalist season of the church continued – most notably in the pastorate of Rev. Dr. Walter Buchanan, who served from 1899-1934. This was the time of the “Fundamentalist/Modernist Controversy” and Buchanan kept a very hard line. Continuing the unfortunate tradition of disputes with neighboring organizations – Dr. Buchanan helped to stir up charges against Rev. Dr. Harry Emerson Fosdick, then the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church – at 5th Avenue and 12th Street. Fosdick, who preached against the so-called “fundamentals,” was effectively forced to resign by the General Assembly. (The Rockefeller family would support Fosdick however, building the Riverside Church to become his new pulpit uptown, only blocks from his one-time antagonist.) On through the 1960s, Broadway maintained a more conservative, but steadily expansive point of view. During the demonstrations of 1968, BPC opened its doors to the Columbia community, and a season of transformation began. In 1974, Broadway called its first female clergy person – the Rev. Abigail Evans, who served as Associate Minister for University Work. Many new ministries were born, including what was then called the 'Broadway Presbyterian Cooperative Nursery School.'  Little by little, the congregation began to turn its attention to issues of social justice. In 1982, the church opened its doors in collaboration with students from Union Seminary and Columbia University, initiating the Community Lunch Program. In the early 1990s, the program would take a new life as **Broadway Community**, which continues to provide food, shelter, education, enrichment, medical care, showers, clothing, and much more to the homeless and poor of our community.  The Rev. Carl Rosenblum became pastor in 1983, and helped to guide the church into a season of growth and energy. In 1994, Rosenblum came out of the closet as a self-affirming gay man. The church was shaken – as some members were deeply troubled by this news and chose to leave the church. Others supported the pastor. The Session (the council of church leaders) voted to affirm his pastorate at the time, but by 1998 the time came to seek a new pastor. The church entered an interim season. In 2000, Rev. Walter Tennyson was called. Tennyson helped guide the church forward, continuing to deepen its sense of progressive engagement with theology and the world. He remained through 2007. From 2007 – 2011, the church functioned under the leadership of an Interim Pastor, Rev. Krystin Granberg. In May of 2011, the church voted to call Rev. Chris Shelton as its Fourteenth Pastor.  Today, after such an extraordinary history -- BPC is a progressive community that welcomes all people regardless of ethnic heritage, national origin, age, gender, marital status, sexual orientation, or socio-economic standing. Though we may read the Bible with different eyes than our ancestors, we continue to believe that it is the foundation of our faith. Guided by the Spirit, our encounter with Scripture calls us to be people of justice, loving-kindness, humility, and joy in all that we do. We are a part of “the Church reformed, always reforming” – and we look forward to all the ways God will continue to lead the Broadway Presbyterian Church. Come just as you are and trust that you’ll be welcome.**  Join us in the Sanctuary, or through our **Live Stream**. Walls can't keep us apart. **SING****.** We sing music that resonates with the themes of the day – sometimes classic hymns, sometimes recently written songs, but always with our own Broadway twist. Our lead musicians (piano and guitar) bring their jazz perspective, but their gifts extend to the sounds of classical, folk, pop, and world musics. (We assemble a choir from time to time, too – if you’re interested in singing, join us! We even gather around the occasional show tune...we are a Broadway church, after all!) **THINK****.** Our Sunday morning worship service centers around Scripture. We wonder at the ways that ancient words can still speak such vital truths -- forever calling us to be people of justice, kindness, and humility (Micah 6:8). Though we aren’t shy about tackling challenging subjects, we always remember not to take ourselves too seriously.  **PLAY****.** We leave room for laughter, and we know that sometimes mistakes happen. (The Good News isn’t that we are supposed to be perfect, after all – the Good News is that we are loved. God has more than enough grace to go around.) **Children** are always welcome, too. Our Sanctuary includes an area for kids—even an aquarium to enjoy. After the children’s sermon, kids gather upstairs for a time of fellowship all their own. **PRAY****.** As siblings in Christ, we take time in each week’s service to pray for one another. The Prayers of the People is an opportunity to lift up joys and concerns, hurts, hopes, and dreams. **EAT****.** On the first Sunday of each month, we celebrate the joyful Feast of God’s Grace – gathering around the Communion Table. We believe that it is the living Christ who invites us to the Table, and we trust that his invitation is for all people. With that in mind, anyone and everyone is welcome to share in the Bread and the Cup. (We also welcome everyone to coffee fellowship each week – and frequently have lunch after worship, too!) **SPLASH****.** Baptism is a joyful time to remember that we belong to God – the Water and the Spirit binds us to God and to each other. If you are interested in being baptized, or in celebrating the Baptism of a child, contact the pastor. **GO****.** Worship isn’t just what we do on Sunday mornings. Worship extends into the world as we put our faith in practice, looking for signs of God’s presence everywhere. We go to love and serve our neighbors. There is so much to learn: about our world, about ourselves, about our God. We could never begin to know it all. We believe that learning happens best in community. At every age and every stage of life our questions, ideas, doubt, and curiosities all matter. Someone asked Jesus, "What's the greatest commandment?" Jesus responded simply enough: "Love God. Love neighbor." That's why we're here. We live out our call to service through our decades long partnership with Broadway Community, providing soup kitchen, shelter, medical services, and so much more to our neighbors in need. Raising children in New York City is an adventure all its own! We take special joy in offering our own **Great Little School** as a first learning community for many kids from our neighborhood and beyond. **Great Little School** (GLS) centers around a Progressive and Project Based philosophy. The Progressive model focuses on understanding each child’s individual development and experiences and providing children with developmentally appropriate, hands-on, learning experiences. Children learn through exploration to inquire, create, and to think abstractly. Through “projects” children delve into areas of interest and teachers build a curriculum based on children’s passions. Children are well prepared for Kindergarten when they leave GLS as they have learned literacy, math, science, music, art, and social emotional concepts through inquiry and exploration instead of simple memorization.  *The curriculum at Great Little School is not based in any faith tradition. (Matthew 18:3) The children of the BPC family have as much to teach the grown-ups as the grown-ups have to teach them, maybe more.  When we say “All are welcome,” we mean kids too, of course! You’ll find a play area toward the back of the Sanctuary — younger kids can play there, hang out with their friends, or help themselves to our activity bags that include coloring pages, books, and more. We even have an aquarium in the Sanctuary, which seems to be a delight for all ages. We encourage older kids to sit with their families. It's good to sing and share together in worship. After the Children's Sermon, all the kids can head upstairs for some thoughtful, playful time in programs of their own. There will often be craft projects, Bible stories, and service opportunities, with some free time to play, too. Kids are welcome to stay with their grown-ups, as well. The table is open to everyone! On communion Sundays, kids who have left the Sanctuary for children's time will be brought back to the sanctuary to share in the feast alongside their family. Whenever we can, we think it's important for our kids to learn the values of service and sharing. Children of all ages are welcome to participate with their parents in our volunteer programs -- working on the rooftop garden, serving meals at Community Table, even serving as Ushers in worship. We bring many perspectives around the table, and the conversation is always lively. On a typical Sunday, the group will explore the Scripture reading that will take center stage during worship. During particular seasons of the church year, the group may dive into related conversations – such as the Christmas letters written while theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer was in prison, or the provocative writings of Marcus Borg on the political implications of the events surrounding Jesus’ death on the cross. Conversations such as these always come with surprises. We celebrate the diverse backgrounds we bring, and give thanks for the lively discussions that arise. All are welcome. The neighborhood is also served by the M4, M5, and M104 bus lines. Our main doors are open for worship services and concert events. If you visit us during the week, be welcome to come to the second set of red doors on 114th Street. We regret to say that our building is not as accessible as we hope it will be in the future. A portable ramp is available, but it helps to let us know you are coming by calling the front desk, (212) 864-6100 x111. Street parking is often available in the area on Sundays -- but street fairs, movie crews, and neighborhood events can sometimes make parking very tricky! Parking garages are available on 114th and 113th streets, near the Mount Sinai Morningside Hospital on Amsterdam Avenue. Chris, who had grown up Baptist, was a scholarship choir member at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Denton, TX. The creative Spirit was particularly alive at Trinity, and the worlds of theology, the arts, justice, curiosity and imagination found new life for Chris – and an unexpected journey began. After college, Chris made the leap from Texas to New York City, earning his Master of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary. Chris was ordained into service in 2004, as Co-Pastor of three congregations in Bergen County, NJ. In 2007 he joined the staff of Hudson River Presbytery (a regional community of 88 churches) as Congregational Connections Presbyter – where he worked with social-justice seekers from across the Hudson Valley. Chris was called as Broadway's Pastor in 2011, and continues to be thrilled to be a part of the vibrant BPC community. While at BPC, Chris has written many hymns and songs for worship. His songs, published by GIA Publications, are now included in hymnals in the US and Scotland. In the summer or 2024, while on sabbatical, Chris was overjoyed to get back to his theatrical roots, putting on his own cabaret performance here on the Upper West Side. Chris and his husband Kevin are awfully proud parents of their 8-year-old son, Ciaran. **Becca Seely** leads the way with Village Campus Ministry, our ecumenical partnership with Advent Lutheran Church and the Church of St. Paul & St. Andrew (United Methodist). Becca was not raised in church and first began to explore questions of faith when she was in college. As a result, she is particularly passionate about working with young adults who are asking questions about God and what gives our lives meaning and purpose. She loves hearing people's stories, learning new things, and discovering the unexpected ways God is working in the world around us. In her free time, she enjoys running, cooking, hanging out with her wife and kids, and planning elaborate theme parties. She is a graduate of Yale Divinity School and Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary. She is an ordained pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Becca leads the Uptown and Downtown branches of Village creating opportunities for learning, worship, and service for students across many of NYC's college and university communities. **Bryan Mealer** is a mental health chaplain, writer, and author. Before coming to Broadway Community, Bryan worked as a mental health clinician and chaplain on one of New York City's Safe Options Support (SOS) outreach teams, helping clients experiencing poor mental health and homelessness stabilize mentally, physically, and spiritually and transition into supportive housing. Bryan trained as a chaplain at Bellevue Hospital while earning his Master of Divinity (MDiv) at Union Theological Seminary and is ordained in the Presbyterian Church (USA). Before entering ministry, Bryan worked as a journalist and published four books, one of which, *The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind*, was a New York Times bestseller. **Julia Hallissey Horner** (she/her) was raised in Cleveland, Ohio and lives now in Washington Heights in New York City. She attended the Ailey/Fordham BFA Program where she graduated with a double major in Dance and Women/Gender Studies. Julia also has her Masters of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary where she concentrated on Interreligious Engagement and Worship, Preaching & the Arts. Working as a freelance dance performer, she has performed works with Winnie Berger's Mook Dance Company & Antonio Brown Dance across New York State and New Jersey. She currently performs with Hudson Ballet Theatre and is in her fourth season with the company. Additionally, Julia has worked extensively with JUNTOS Collective, a dance non-profit, working as a staff member, dance performer, and dance educator, traveling in New York, San Francisco, Boston, Mexico, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Colombia. Additionally Julia is a choreographer and dance educator at Discovery Programs on the Upper West Side, and at City Center Dance in White Plains. She is pursuing ordination within the United Church of Christ, called to build community through vulnerable storytelling and the arts and advocate for diverse voices and representation in intercultural and interfaith justice work.  **Stephanie Cooke** joined the BPC team in 2014 in the position of Church Administrator. She has a background in both office management, with a degree from Berkeley College, and child care, making her an excellent fit for our team. She is a lifelong Bergen County, NJ resident; in fact she is part of the 4th generation of a large family born and raised in Bergen County. Stephanie is an avid sports fan, following her favorite teams, the Yankees, the Jets, and the Islanders. She also loves to do photography as a hobby. And, fair warning, Jersey Girl though she proudly is, you might just hear country music coming from her office. As an internationally performing pianist and composer and educator, **Antonio Truyols** has enraptured audiences across four continents. His performance credits include appearances at embassies in Washington D.C. and Europe, the Royal Palace in Bucharest, and feature performances in Switzerland, Italy, Spain, France, Northern Africa and China in the jazz and classical genres. Truyols has toured China multiple times, the most recent of which included dozens of solo features across the mainland from the southern Guangdong and Zhejiang provinces to northern Inner Mongolia. His work in China has also extended to incidental music where he wrote and recorded original music for a new production of *Pride and Prejudice* at the Poly Theater in Beijing. Unit Three, the piano trio founded and led by Truyols earned the prize of Best Band in the Bucharest International Jazz Competition. As a soloist, Truyols served as Artist in Residence at the Tianjin Grand Theater in mainland China as the debut jazz performance in Tianjin where his performance was described as “Magic on the Piano.” For his performances and compositions, he has garnered awards from the American Viola Society, the Maurice Gardner Composition Competition, the Nottingham International Jazz Piano Competition, and the Downbeat Awards. A true crossover pianist, he has performed with Paquito D’Rivera, Joshua Bell, Wynton Marsalis, Chris Thile. Truyols has also arranged and recorded albums with Lee Konitz, John Ellis, Donny McCaslin, and Joel Frahm among many others. His work whether it be in jazz, popular music, film music, or concert composition reflects the unique blend of his Spanish, Peruvian, and Puerto Rican heritage. Truyols is a truly American Sound that continues to capture the attention of his listeners. **Patrick Mahaney** is a very handy person to have around. Patrick has been a part of the BPC family since he was a kid, and it seems unlikely that he'll ever grow up, which is good news for everyone! Patrick brings light to our building in ways practical and metaphorical, both inside and out. An information technology specialist by day, and a theatrical designer by night, Patrick always has some creative project going on. For down time, you might find him on a sailboat off Long Island, or in an RV (or motorcycle) heading cross country. Patrick also serves as one of BPC's great team of Elders.  Since December 2021, **Isaac Adlerstein** has served as the Executive Director of Broadway Community. Raised in Queens and Long Island, Isaac has formally been involved in homeless services since 2017, when he began his work at the Interfaith Nutrition Network (The INN), Long Island’s largest homeless services agency. At The INN, Isaac served at the agency’s flagship soup kitchen and assisted Guests with securing employment, housing, and other resources. He ultimately joined The INN’s staff and led projects to develop more effective case management and reporting tools.  Immediately prior to joining Broadway Community, Isaac served as the Director of Volunteer Services at Commonpoint Queens, Queens’ largest social service agency. There, Isaac oversaw all agency volunteer operations and mobilized 1,500 volunteers to provide critical support to the agency's food pantries, workforce development initiatives, senior centers, and after school programs. Isaac has also worked with Paul’s Place in Baltimore, the Baltimore Mayor’s Office of Homeless Services, and Habitat for Humanity NYC. In the Summer of 2023, Isaac led a $75 million initiative with the Eric Adams Administration and New York Disaster Interfaith Services (NYDIS) to create 50 new shelters within houses of worship for asylum seekers — with the programs of Broadway Community being held up as the model for what's possible. Isaac was a central part of a working group about the faith community's response to homelessness and wrote the language upon which the program is based. Isaac holds a Bachelors in Political Science from Johns Hopkins University and currently serves as the Board Chair of the Emergency Shelter Network (ESN), a subsidiary nonprofit of NYDIS that empowers faith-based organizations to provide shelter, assistance, and support to New Yorkers experiencing homelessness. **Jaya Misra** is the Nursery School Director of the Great Little School at BPC. Prior to her role as Director, she worked as an Assistant Preschool Director, Child Development Specialist, and as a classroom teacher for ten years. She is an advocate of play based, developmentally meaningful education. Other areas of importance in her life are animal rescue, creative writing, and spending lots of time with her family and friends. She is grateful to be in such a warm and accepting community and to work with children, teachers, and families. **Dale White** is an Equity Actor/ Theatrical Carpenter. He has over 12 years of experience within the theatre and now spends most of his time keeping the cogs of BPC running. He enjoys building random things, playing video games, karaoke, and spending time with the dog. Dale always cheers for all the Detroit teams in sports, but never cheers for winter. Chef Tim shares his culinary skills and experience with our Soup Kitchen guests -- serving up beautifully prepared, tasty meals every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. **Laurens Feliksdal** was born in Suriname, in South America. He graduated from the Algemene Middelbare School, the oldest educational institution in Suriname. He came to the United States in 1986, and has four children: Gilton, Eunice, Jamal, and Chantal. He loves sports (especially the local New York teams) and enjoys good food. Laurens says, “I love working for BPC, because I meet new people every day and get the chance to help.” **Gregory Togbah** is a New Yorker, through and through. Born in Metropolitan Hospital and raised in the City all his life, Gregory says, “I’ve seen a lot, as a child and as a grown-up, but life goes on.” Gregory is the senior member of the Broadway Presbyterian Church staff, having worked here since 2002. One of his favorite jobs at BPC is opening the church doors on Sunday morning – in doing so, Gregory gets our spirit of welcome started. A fan of different kinds of music, he also likes to D.J. whenever he gets the chance. True to her name, **Sassy** is our building's "sassy," but lovable mascot. She can often be seen tagging along with the Building Superintendent or hanging out in the church office. She even gets to visit the Nursery School kids from time to time.
